Study: ABS On Motorcycles Can Reduce Crash Risk For Cyclists
A new study released by the Highway Loss Data Institute found antilock brakes cut crashes for all motorcyclists, but especially for new cyclists.
The HLDI compared the rate claims were filed for bikes equipped with ABS versus bikes not equipped with ABS and found bikes were 30 percent less likely to have a collision claim within the first 90 days of a policy. After that, the benefit decreased a bit, but was still 19 percent, which was an 11 percent decrease.
Additionally, the study found medical claims were 34 percent less for those who owned bikes equipped with ABS systems.
Throughout an almost 10 year period, the study found collision claims were filed 23 percent less often if a bike was equipped with ABS.
A rider’s level of expertise was not tracked in this study. The stats are based solely on insurance claims.
