A 69-year-old West Bend man drowned while swimming in a Sandy Knoll park pond in Washington County Tuesday.

According to reports, the man failed to resurface for 10 minutes and was found in six to eight feet of water. He did not have a pulse and was not breathing. Efforts to perform CPR were unsuccessful and he died at the scene.

The incident is under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

In Wisconsin, an average of 53 people drown a year in the state, mostly in the summer months when more people are in the water.

The Consumer and Product Safety Commission's “Pool Safely” Campaign is scheduled for the end of the month and helps remind people of pool safety tips that make any swimming environment safer.
