A new study released by State Farm shows Wisconsin drivers have a 1-in-79 chance of having a collision with a deer while driving.

Data collected from their drivers and accidents that have occurred show deer collisions are most likely during October and November, in the thick of the rut. The rut usually occurs during the first few weeks of November when deer go through the peak of their mating season and therefore there is an increase in movement within the deer populations. Many deer are on the move at both dusk and dawn, when transitioning from where they sleep to where they are finding food.

According to the study, more than 18 percent of deer-vehicle collisions occur in November, when they are three times more likely to occur than any other time of the year. October is the second most likely crash month while December is the third.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Wisconsin law enforcement reported more than 18,000 deer – motor vehicle crashes in 2011.
