WHAT ARE WISCONSIN DOG BITE LAWS?

A vicious animal attack should never be taken lightly. These attacks can result in serious injury and infections. According to Wisconsin's Statute 174.02, if an owner has never received notice of their dog being an endangerment, they are liable for the full amount of damages caused by their dog's injury to a person, animal or property. Owner's that have not received prior notice are required to pay a maximum fee of $2,500.

However, if an owner has received notice of their animal's potential endangerment to others but neglected to address the issue, they are liable for two times the full amount of damages caused by the dog's injury to a person, animal, or property. Owners who have received notice may be required to pay up to $5,000 in fees.

Our firm is well-versed in handling all types of injury claims and can help you navigate this time. We truly care about our clients and are here to stand by their side from start to finish.

ALWAYS REPORT AN DOG BITE INJURY

It is important to report dog bites whenever they happen, even if you have no intention of pursuing a claim. When an animal exhibits aggressive behavior, the authorities should be made aware. Even if you were able to avoid serious injury, the animal may attack someone else, and having a previously documented attack will help that person recover damages.

Wisconsin holds animal owners liable for the damages their animal causes. If the owner has been previously warned that their dog injured someone, then they must pay double damages for the new incident.
Dog bite damages can include:
  • Medical bills
  • Pain and suffering
  • Loss of income
  • Property damage
  • Loss of consortium
  • Punitive damages

WE CHARGE NO FEE IF WE DON'T COLLECT

Dog bite laws vary state by state. If you have heard stories from others that the cases are not worth it, or are impossible to win, do not take their word for it. Wisconsin law allows dog bite victims to recover damages from the owner of the dog.
