TYPES OF TRUCKING ACCIDENTS

Two types of trucking accidents are unique to commercial trucks:

  • Jackknifing can occur when there is sudden braking or turning. In many cases, the driver may be held responsible for negligent driving when failing to remain aware of nearby cars.
  • Improper turning or lane changing may also cause a trucking accident. Truck mirrors are specifically designed to give drivers an encompassing view of their surroundings. It is their job to remain cautious and give other drivers ample warning when making a turn.

COMMON CAUSES OF TRUCK ACCIDENTS

  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Excess use of caffeine pills to stay awake, resulting in rash driving
  • Improperly loaded cargo
  • Failure to properly maintain truck

HOW MANY ACCIDENTS ARE CAUSED BY SEMI TRUCKS?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2017 there were over 148,000 injuries throughout the U.S. related to trucking accidents. They estimated that this would mean there were about 195 injuries from truck accidents each day.

In more serious cases, the NHTSA reported that there were over 4,700 fatalities due to truck accidents in the U.S. in 2017. That breaks down to 13 fatalities per day.

In Wisconsin alone, they reported the following truck accident statistics for the year 2018:

  • Over 70 fatalities resulted from accidents involving large trucks in 2018
  • 2% of vehicle accident fatalities were occupants of large trucks
  • 15% of fatalities were occupants of "light," or Utility trucks

5 / 5 stars

I couldn't even think straight when I lost my daughter so tragically. You are not only a great lawyer to me, but a great counselor. You never let go of my hand through all the ups and downs. Just having a relationship with you meant so much to me, and I would never want to go through this with anyone else.
