On New Year's Eve in 2009, police were chasing Johnny Jones, 34, who had been wanted for more than two weeks at the time. Jones slammed into the vehicle with the 21-year-old student and her boyfriend. She was killed and her boyfriend sustained serious injuries.
Jones pleaded not guilty in May to negligent homicide and a hit-and-run causing death and great bodily harm. In addition to the 15-year sentence, Jones has to spend an additional five years in prison for a parole violation and was ordered to pay $8,000 in restitution.
